How to Improve Indoor Air Quality for Babies

Most young children, especially toddlers under the age of 24 months, spend the majority of their time indoors. In this blog, our HVAC experts share a few ways to make your indoor air healthier and safer for your children.

Indoor Air Quality for Babies

  • Keep a window open. As long as the outside air in your area is good, a little natural ventilation can’t hurt. When the weather is warm and pleasant, crank open a window in your children’s room slightly. Running the exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen can also help get rid of indoor pollutants.

  • Put a stop to PAHs. Studies show that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. or PAHs, is usually associated with allergy and respiratory outcomes. There are several steps you can take that will minimize the PAHs in your home. For instance, when preparing a meal for your family, make it a practice to use a stove fan and, of course, be sure not to burn or char food. You may also want to ditch scented candles and incense and use essential oils to scent the air throughout your living space instead. Regularly vacuuming carpets and mopping floors will also reduce PAHs that cling to dust in your home.

  • Kick the habit. This should go without saying — never light and smoke a cigarette anywhere near your child or inside your home. Even third-hand smoke can leave a nasty smell in your hair and clothes, and it’s not easy to remove.

  • Reduce pet dander. Some babies are extremely sensitive to pet dander. Though regular grooming of your pets can help reduce the spread of pet hair, you can’t stop them from shedding altogether. The best way to get around this is by using HEPA filters to trap pet hair and dander and keep them from reaching your baby’s room.
