Popular Home Heating Myths

HVAC systems can be complex, but with the proper understanding, homeowners can ensure their longevity and functionality. This involves being aware of the conflicting statements people are told about the upkeep or usage of their system. An air conditioning company in the community runs down a few of the most common heating myths we should all take note of here.

Heating Myths

The bigger the furnace, the more effective it will be. As most experts would remind you, “the bigger, the better” doesn’t always apply. Remember that the size of your heating unit will depend on many factors— the size of your home, its layout and the quality of the ductwork.

Duct tape can effectively seal leaks.  Duct tape may be appropriate in some instances, but not this one. Keep in mind that if your ductwork is leaking, it’s best to have it checked by HVAC company professionals. Trained, experienced technicians will be able to locate the source of the leak and fix the problem to make certain it won’t happen again.

Closing vents will help you save on energy costs. This isn’t necessarily true. Apparently, this practice can actually cause your HVAC system to work harder than it should. The added strain on the equipment may also cause it to experience issues and break down prematurely.

You should turn off your furnace when you’re not at home. This may sound plausible, but experts strongly discourage homeowners from turning off the furnace when leaving the house, even for an extended period of time. While you may be able to save a small amount of money by turning it off, your furnace will experience significant tension when you turn it back on when you return.
