Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Get an Oversized AC Unit

When choosing a new air conditioner, you may be thinking about getting a bigger unit to achieve better indoor cooling. However, doing this can actually do more harm than good. In addition to inconsistent comfort, your air conditioner may experience issues that prevent it from performing its best. In this post, Stone Heating and Air explains what can happen when you get an oversized AC unit.

Oversized AC Unit

Short cycling. Short cycling is when your air conditioning unit turns on and off frequently. If you’ve noticed that your air conditioner is only running for a few minutes at a time before shutting down, this is a sign that it’s too big. A properly-sized AC unit operates on consistent cycles to keep your home cool.

High indoor humidity. If your home feels too humid, this isn’t necessarily a sign that you need a dehumidifier. It can, however, be a sign that your air conditioner is too big. Since your AC can’t run regular cycles, the cycles won’t be long enough to remove the humidity from the air. To cool and dehumidify your air, your air conditioner’s cycle should last 20 to 30 minutes at a time.

Hot spots in the house. An AC unit that’s too big won’t keep your home cool consistently. When this occurs, you may notice that there are some rooms in your home that are cool and others that are hot. It’s the inconsistency of the airflow from the ducts that causes inconsistent temperatures throughout your house.

A significant increase in your energy bills. Since your AC unit is short cycling, it will turn on and off frequently. Because of this, your energy bills will rise. If you notice that your energy bills are higher than you think they should be, this is a sign that your AC unit is too big for your home.

In regard to your air conditioning unit, bigger isn’t always better. You must always make sure that you choose the correct size for your unit so that it functions perfectly.
