Ways to Make Sure Your Furnace Is Winter-Ready

Outdoor temperatures are dropping, and we expect this to continue over the next few months. As you spend more time indoors to avoid the frigid weather, you must make sure your furnace is in good working condition. Today, Stone Heating and Air, your local HVAC repair and replacement pros, shares ways to boost your HVAC unit’s efficiency and performance in time for the winter season.

Replace the Air Filter

We always recommend changing your furnace filter after a certain period of use. The amount of time between changes will depend on the type of filter your HVAC unit uses. If it’s a pleated or polyester filter, we recommend changing it every three months. A monthly replacement is required if you have fiberglass filters.

Perform a Thorough Cleaning

Your furnace and registers will accumulate dust and dirt over time, so be sure to thoroughly clean them periodically with a vacuum cleaner or broom. Pay attention to the burners, blower blades and heat vents as well.

Inspect Furnace Components

Examine your furnace’s components for any problems. Make sure the exhaust flue outdoors isn’t blocked by branches, animal nests or any other obstructions. Also, inspect the blower belt, the largest rubber belt inside the furnace unit. Any HVAC replacement pro will recommend having it replaced if there are cracks in it.

Adjust the Thermostat

Check your thermostat to see if the batteries need to be changed, and consider calibrating it as well. If you want to decrease your energy consumption, set your thermostat back seven to 10 degrees Fahrenheit when you leave the house for the day, and again when you go to bed.

To ensure your furnace won’t run into problems this winter, look into scheduled maintenance agreements, such as those we offer here at Stone Heating and Air. As a leading heating and air conditioning repair contractor, we believe it’s the smartest way to ensure your HVAC system runs smoothly and efficiently when you need it most.
