What to Do if Your AC Is Leaking

HVAC systems consist of hardy equipment and components designed to last a long time. However, they can still encounter issues like AC leaks, which affect their performance and utility costs.

AC Is Leaking

In this post, Stone Heating and Air shares tips on what you can do in case of an AC leak.

Check Your Drain Line

HVAC units have a drain line where condensate from cooling goes into. If your unit is leaking, it might be problems with the drain line. Clogging is the usual culprit as debris can build up around the end or in the middle of the drain line, especially if it’s damaged. Most clogs can be washed away or blown out, so be sure to clean your drain line thoroughly.

Improper orientation of your drain line can also cause your AC to leak. If the line is level or angled incorrectly, the condensate won’t be able to flow down properly. Make sure to keep your drain line as straight as possible to allow gravity to do its work.

Inspect Your Evaporator Coil

AC leaks can be caused by a frozen evaporator coil. These coils tend to freeze when there is insufficient airflow, a refrigerant leak, or clogged air filters. Regularly clean or replace your air filters. This task can easily be done by following manufacturer instructions. If you’re dealing with a refrigerant leak, call professionals to look at your HVAC and address the source of the problem.

Find Out if Your HVAC Was Installed Properly

Poor installation can cause your AC to leak. Sometimes, the culprit is an incorrectly installed condensate trap or drain line. After the contractor installs your HVAC unit, check the quality of installation and see if anything looks off. If you’re unsure whether your HVAC was installed properly, you can consult a different HVAC professional.
